Coffey Break Chat: How to Quiet the Lizard Brain

Hey there!

I recently had the pleasure of sitting down with my good friend and marketer, Ahrif Sarumi, to discuss the concept of the Lizard Brain, and more importantly, how to quiet it! So many of us have goals and dreams that we can’t go a day without thinking about, but we’re just too scared to pursue them. That feeling is no mistake! There is a part of our brain called the amygdala, and it’s job is to provide us with our most primal instincts: fear, hunger and arousal. It drives us to fend off predators and protect ourselves from harm. In theory, it’s a blessing, but the key is learning how to push past it, so that we can take risks and achieve all that God has in store for us!

In our interview, I share my personal struggle with getting past my lizard brain, and why The Coffey Break Chat is such a big part of this process. Take a look below for Ahrif’s three tips on how to overcome being your biggest obstacle! Enjoy!

Silk Road

3 Chelsea Coffey LOTD 10.17.13This look revolved around a busy day of activities. Like most Thursday’s, I needed a vibe that would translate well in several different types of environments: work, a networking event and dinner. Fortunately, this BCBG top from Nordstrom Rack and Steve Madden wedges did the trick.

Posting all these looks has actually revealed to me that I have had a huge fashion crush on BCBG for the longest time lol –like prior to even really knowing the brand and all its fashionable goodness. There’s just just something about their silhouettes and classic attention to detail and designer that win me over time and time again.

Interestingly, I had the pleasure of interviewing BCBG’s Chief Creative Officer Lubov Azria at Fashion Houston last year. Not only is her story incredibly touching, I told her about my nonprofit Mia’s Closet when we finished the interview, and she invited me to a private event at Nordstrom the following day! –I’m still excited if you can’t tell haha What I love is that it is a firsthand priority for her to not only be a leader in her organization, but accessible to her team as well. To say the least, she has set such a great example, and I look forward to following suit given the platform. To this day I’m still super smitten –making my ongoing love affair with their brand all the more appealing. Song of the Day: “Nanjing Road East (Instrumental)” by The Shanghai Restoration Project

New job. New beginning. Endless opportunity.

Hey guys!
This is long overdue, but I have exciting news! God is amazingly wonderful and gracious! I couldn’t be more excited to announce that I have a new job! As of September, I was brought on the Houston Style Magazine team as their Fashion and Social Media editor. My first assignment was Mercedes Benz Fashion Week Spring 2013 which I attended with Houston Style Magazine National Entertainment reporter Rebecca Briscoe in New York, New York.
I had the wonderful pleasure of interviewing author and celebrity stylist June Ambrose after the Rebecca Minkoff show! Video below, enjoy!

June Ambrose on MBFW, Her Must Haves &  Being a Rockmom!

For those of you who may be unfamiliar with June, aka the Style Curator and Rock Mom, here’s a tidbit about her from her website:

Whether designing custom metallic leather pants for Sean “Diddy” Combs and Busta Rhymes, One of a kind pieces for Jay Z & Will Smith or Styling & crafting couture outfits for divas such as Zoe Saldana, Missy Elliott, Kelly Ripa, Kim Cattrall, Mariah Carey, Mary J. Blige, Alicia Keys, Estelle, Garcelle Beauvais and Ciara, June has left an indelible mark on today’s youth, inspiring countless trends and major fashion statements found in popular culture.

Despite various accolades and titles, June Ambrose has been every bit of an awesome example of how to grace her transition to greater fame in humility. She was unbelievably warm and approachable and gave us a meaningful (& long!) interview. It was a really pleasant experience, and I will definitely use her welcoming disposition as my personal standard in the future.  Just watch 😉
Best,
-Chelsea
