That time I got locked out of Bill and Debra’s taking out the trash. Wearing the overcoat of the old man next door, his nurse had me wait on the steps… Maybe it was because I was running around the neighborhood (the shame! haha), in my socks, trying to borrow someone’s phone. Which leads to the size and a half too small shoes on my feet from the neighbors across the street. He politely explained to me that they were Gucci, so please don’t forget to bring them back. What a mess of a day haha
Headed home to Sugar Land for the first time since the journey began. I was leaving with so much more than I came with. It was a literal 180. God had blessed me with a new job and a place by then. So much to be thankful for. This was a good day :’-)

Say It Loud

Hey guys!

A few week’s ago we had the pleasure of hosting one of the most beautiful displays of love I’ve seen to this day, a bridal shower for my dear friend Raisa and her fiance, Chris. In the midst of everything going on, I looked up and realized we had a house full of fabulous naturalistas. Wearing one’s hair in it’s natural state, which by definition to me is simply not having a relaxer, is about more than just looks. It’s a reflection of embracing one’s natural design whether that be in the form of an afro, twistout, blowout, protective style, the list goes on. What matters most is that for a people who have been told that they’re not enough for the longest, expressions of self-love and acceptance are totally worth celebrating.

Whenever something gets under my skin, the following quote comes to mind, be the change you want to see in this world, and one day it hit me like a ton of bricks. Why should I continue to allow myself to be disappointed by the media for it’s lack of appreciation for the full scope of black beauty, culture, and narratives? –Think solution, not problem. I have a voice, and I have a platform. Do something about it.

Join me in celebrating these queens for their instrumental roles in leading the way for a generation that needs to be consistently encouraged and reminded that they are more than enough. Say it loud! Enjoy!

Natural Hair How-To: Protective Style Two Strand Twist Updo

Hey guys!

It’s the funniest thing how it seems that the most random of hairstyles draw the most attention. I was hoping to get my hair braided to give it a break from all the maintenance, but it fell through and and this style is what I came up with as a replace for a protective look.

Ironically, I’ve been getting stopped. A lot lol And I’ve had quite a few people tell me that they’d –never be able to do something like this. Lies! It’s SO easy that I wanted to do a quick how-to!

Step 1: Section off the hair.  There are three ways that I typically stretch my hair: blow dry, flat-iron or bantu knot. In the case of this style, I had just washed my hair so I had already blow dried it, and it was already paired off into sections. I generally split my hair into 10-12 sections of two strand twists and I determine the part based on whichever way I want the style to fall.

Step 2: Stretch and/or smooth the section. I flat-ironed each two strand twist from the root to about halfway to the end of the section.  I did this because whoever is braiding my hair moves a lot faster with the hair smooth at the root. *Feel free to skip this step, but I will add that I’ve really liked watching the style progress from a more sleek look to a more textured look due to the rain we’ve been having over the last few days. It’s like two styles in one 😉

Step 3: Twist, Tuck & Roll. So at this point there are 12 sets of two strand twists. To get the crown affect, decide which side you want to work on first and have you bobby pins ready. Then twist the two strand twists with the next two strand twist section, working your way towards the nape of your neck and pin at the center. Repeat the same motion on the other side adjusting accordingly moving down towards the nape of your neck and pin.

Step 4: Final Tuck. At this point, you may have a little hang-time at the nape of your neck from the two sides. I generally tuck each piece into the opposite side and pin.

*Disclaimer: This is my first how-to so please don’t hesitate to ask whatever questions or offer suggestions that may be helpful. I’ll definitely take more photos of the process and even record a quick video so you guys can have more visual aids!

I hope this was helpful! Have a great week!

11.12.13

LOTD Chelsea Coffey 11.12.13

At the first sign of the temperature dropping I stock up on all my winter faves:

1. Sweatpants (Easy to dress up or down, great for night to day transitions)

2. Sweatshirts(Makes life on the go crazy efficient, I can barely make moves when I’m cold)

3. Scarves (I layer like crazy in an effort to stay warm, so scarves are a great substitute for necklaces)

Type Writer Pendant Necklace

This is one of the coolest gifts I’ve received to date. So much love to my good friend Andrea for thinking of me. The pendant on the necklace is the back space button from a typewriter. The creativity of jewelry designers always inspires me to think of new ways to rework the random pieces I’ve collected over the years.

Okay, okay, so it’s official. I’m ready to acknowledge that I have become a sneaker wedge junkie. I just can’t get enough of these bad boys.

The Flat Remix -Houston

Tonight is the second installment of The Flat pop up dinner series. I can’t really think of a better combination than my favorite place to go out annnd a bi monthly dinner series built around it. Good times ahead. Have a great day everyone!
