What’s Going On: Reduce. Reuse. Recycle.

1 Chelsea Coffey LOTD 9.26.13For as long as I can remember, I’ve had an ongoing love affair with all things 70’s. The fashion, the music, the hair, the list goes on. I go back and forth between whether I was born in the wrong decade or just lucky enough to have been born after to appreciate it in all its amazing fullness.

For as long as i can remember, our family has recycled. My mom especially has a special love for the environment, and her earth friendly nature has had a trickle down affect on me. Back in May, I was approached by a local anti high school dropout program for girls. They were looking to bring the girl’s out to select looks from our Mia’s Closet’s inventory. The pieces would then be altered by the girls to use in a Reduce Reuse Recycle fashion show. There is a significant part of our culture that suggests anything that isn’t new or insanely expensive lacks value. I’m a big believer in breaking that mindset, and this look is a reflection of that.

The layered bracelet in particular was a gift that was originally created as a necklace, but I reworked it to fit my personal style. I’ve got a love hate relationship with inexpensive jewelry. Most of it comes from Forever 21, so the paint fades quickly and I’m always allergic to the earring posts. I’ve got remedies for both issues. I use a liquid pen in gold or silver to touch up fading jewelry, followed up with a clear coat of nail polish.  I’ve actually started using a no chip clear coat from day one to prolong the original paints wear. The same clear nail polish saves the day when it comes to earring posts. It creates a great buffer between the skin and earring. I could go on forever about ways to extend the use of your wardrobe, but hopefully these tips will be useful in the meantime. Have a great weekend!

Let Me See You Move It Shake Cross The Dance Floor

My outfits generally channel a vibe of some kind, and I am totally smitten over this fall’s hat selection. This look’s inspiration is Indiana Jones. My new hat reminded both me and my younger brother/photographer of him, and years of watching his movies with our Dad over the holidays.

It may be something I’ll chuckle at when looking back in 5 years, but it’s all worth it to feel amazing in that moment. I’ve always joked that I was born in the wrong decade and the 70’s are definitely my favorite when it comes to fashion. My song of the day is Cross the Dance Floor by Treasure Fingers in the spirit of all things boogie. Have a great day!

We’d had around three straight days of showers, so I jumped at the opportunity to put together this layered look! The pieces are a combination of new and old, and feature two of my old faithfuls: the cardigan and leopard print slippers. Friday was a busy day running errands in preparation for our very first Sunday Dinner with TheCoffeyBreak.com benefitting Mia’s Closet. The evening was just s jam packed as the day, so I knew I needed to prepare an outfit that would transition well. The great thing about these pants is that they are easy to dress up without overpowering a more casual daytime look. Hope this inspired someone!

Have a great week! Peace, Love & Sunshine -Chelsea

Throwback Thursday

8 Chelsea Coffey 9.18.2013Yesterday was crazy busy, so I needed a look that would transition well from day to night. A lightweight black blazer and heel always seem to do the trick for me.

These shoes epitomize my dreams of one day being old enough to wear pieces from my mom’s closet. I liked them so much she just gave them to me when I was old enough. I’ll be hanging on to these forever ❤

02 Chelsea Coffey 9.18.2013 There’s a constant conversation about the rate that technology is advancing. Between amazingly sophisticated cameras and even more incredible editing programs, there seems to be an unbelievably beautiful crop of images to benchmark against. I recently got a DSLR, and I cherish it dearly; however,  I couldn’t help but be charmed by our attempts to catch these Look of the Day shots with our iPhones late last night. There’s a certain nostalgia for me any time I see a grainy photo. It’s like a quick throwback to 1999; long before I had access to the frills of filters and other image enhancers.   Ya, the lighting was bad, our phones were dying, the flash was giving out… it was a mess haha Nonetheless though, my sweet boyfriend had a great attitude and was able to catch a few shots worth sharing. Excuses are for jokers, right? The weekend’s almost here. Hang in there! Peace, Love & Sunshine -Chelsea
