What’s Going On: Reduce. Reuse. Recycle.

1 Chelsea Coffey LOTD 9.26.13For as long as I can remember, I’ve had an ongoing love affair with all things 70’s. The fashion, the music, the hair, the list goes on. I go back and forth between whether I was born in the wrong decade or just lucky enough to have been born after to appreciate it in all its amazing fullness.

For as long as i can remember, our family has recycled. My mom especially has a special love for the environment, and her earth friendly nature has had a trickle down affect on me. Back in May, I was approached by a local anti high school dropout program for girls. They were looking to bring the girl’s out to select looks from our Mia’s Closet’s inventory. The pieces would then be altered by the girls to use in a Reduce Reuse Recycle fashion show. There is a significant part of our culture that suggests anything that isn’t new or insanely expensive lacks value. I’m a big believer in breaking that mindset, and this look is a reflection of that.

The layered bracelet in particular was a gift that was originally created as a necklace, but I reworked it to fit my personal style. I’ve got a love hate relationship with inexpensive jewelry. Most of it comes from Forever 21, so the paint fades quickly and I’m always allergic to the earring posts. I’ve got remedies for both issues. I use a liquid pen in gold or silver to touch up fading jewelry, followed up with a clear coat of nail polish.  I’ve actually started using a no chip clear coat from day one to prolong the original paints wear. The same clear nail polish saves the day when it comes to earring posts. It creates a great buffer between the skin and earring. I could go on forever about ways to extend the use of your wardrobe, but hopefully these tips will be useful in the meantime. Have a great weekend!

Save The Future

Sometimes the weight of the world seems to weigh a little heavy for my comfort. For whatever reason, the best way for me to shake it is by putting on a fun outfit and a great playlist. This look is a reflection of this. Check out one of my jams below. 2 Chelsea Coffey LOTD 9.24.13 3 Chelsea Coffey LOTD 9.24.13 JPG 4 Chelsea Coffey LOTD 9.24.13 5 Chelsea Coffey LOTD 9.24.13

This is one of my favorite sweatshirts in time. Short of it getting physically destroyed, I plan on hanging on to it forever. Hopefully it’s message plants the seed for those who view it to give back, get involved and make a difference.

Look of the Day 4.7.2013

Hey there!

Hope everyone’s had a nice weekend. There was a part of me that was starting to feel a little sad about the weather warming up…until it does something like DROP 20 degrees in a hour. Thankfully this beautiful city has trained me to be resilient, and my favorite tribal print scarf came to the rescue to save the day.

What I wore:

Hoodie: Marshalls

Jeans: Wish I could remember.

Earrings: Gifted from Paris by our Food Contributor Andrea (Love her!)

Hand/Arm Candy: Forever 21

Shoes: Target

Just FYI, my nonprofit, Mia’s Closet had the wonderful opportunity to receive a prom dresses via a donation drive by Saks Fifth Avenue in the Galleria Houston (photos here). The dresses benefited the ladies of Lil Audrey’s Safe Place Foundation, and it was such an incredible blessing.  To this day, my senior prom was one of the most special experiences I’ve had. Everything from selecting the dress to getting my hair done marked an unforgettable memory. Although we’ve been able to provide the dresses, there are still expenses remaning that could jepeordize the full effect for the girls. Please email us at miasclosethouston@gmail.com if you’re interested in sponsoring (shoes, jewelry, purse, mani/pedi, etc.)  a young lady in need.
