Like Water for Chocolate

IMG_8200 IMG_8199 IMG_8201 IMG_8202

IMG_8203With the exception of a quick run to tutor one of my favorite fourth graders and stop by the grocery store to get flour for my oatmeal raisin cookies, was a working from home on my laptop kinda day. This look had just enough going on to send me out the door with a little pep in my step. I’m a big believer in dressing beyond your mood, so whether you’re feeling on top of the world or down in the dumps, I always remind myself that a little bit goes a long way.

Actually, In all honesty, it wasn’t so much the outfit that did it for me (obviously haha) So, Lauren London is now a character on BET’s hit show The Game, and from the moment she entered the scene in a recent episode, I knew that the lipstick she was wearing had to have been Ruby Woo! Kudos to Mac for doing such a fantastic job designing that stunning shade of red with a hint of blue. The only downside for me is the fact that that bad boy is nearly impossible to get on without a slick aide. Fortunately, I have the perfect solution! This may come as a surprise, but Wet N’ Wild has the most perfect assortment of matte colors, and their Stoplight Red is the ideal compliment. To create the lip color above, I apply a thin layer of Stoplight Red to  both my top and bottom lips, followed up by lining my lips with Ruby Woo and then filling in my bottom lip a slight bit with more of the Ruby Woo. The result is the bold color shown above. Hope this is useful for you guys! Although I don’t wear much makeup, I consider myself a master mixer when it comes to blending lip colors. It’s taken me quite sometime to figure the science behind getting right, but it got it! haha Have a great day!

A Confident Expectation

Grey really is my favorite color to wear. I can’t get enough of it, and my new sweatshirt from Forever 21 is just simple enough to dress up (like I did for church) or down when I’m on the run.

BCBG steals my heart over and over with their awesome shoe selection.

For as long as I can remember, I’ve come across people who have corrected me whenever I used phrases with the word hope…”I hope such and such comes to pass.” “I’m hoping it’ll happen.” etc. Evidently, some people feel it suggests a lack of confidence in the desired outcome. Well, Sunday at church our pastor introduced me to a new way to look at the word hope. He shared with us that the biblical definition of hope is, “A confident expectation of WHAT IS ABSOLUTELY TRUE.”

To say the least, I have marinated in the awesomeness of this new definition and the following quote he shared, “Lord, I have faith in you. I believe my future is better than my past. I’m putting my trust in you.”

This year has been filled with a series of highs and lows, and I rest in the peace of knowing that there are so many sources of positive thinking around me. Never lose sight of the vision God has set before you. Whether that’s regarding your career, your purpose or relationships. I’m hoping to see the fullness of all His wonderful promises in the near future! Be blessed.

God has a special way of delivering us out of situations. Last week I finally had the opportunity to go to another one of my church’s connect groups. Our most recent series at church was called Simplify. We had just come out of an absolutely life changing  series called Love, Sex and Dating.  It challenged me to look at myself and relationships in a completely new way and revolutionized my level of dedication to committing to a track that would best position me to show the Lord how dedicated I am to walking in His will –annnd hopefully meet an amazing man who would become my husband some day haha

That night, I was pleasantly surprised when we started talking about King David’s relationship with God. King David’s story is one of my all time favorites, but his life is also one of the most dramatic  tales. To say the least,  I was curious to see how King David would fit into the idea of simplifying. Within no time it was all very clear. Our group leader did a fantastic job of conveying how God’s grace is a gift. He then went on to share specific examples of how we can’t earn grace through works. I especially appreciated the mention that so many of our relationships are works based. “She did this for me, so I should probably go ahead and do this for her.” “He came to this, so I should make sure I make it to that.” I could give a million examples of times those situations come up, and I am so grateful that I was able to receive that message because it made me question if that was an underlying expectation in my heart when it came to my relationships.

For me, it was the perfect compliment to the Love, Sex and Dating series. I took a note of the following quote: Whatever your strongest relationship is, so is your identity.  As a Christian, I have set up parameters when dating to do my best to avoid any relationship from ever creating a disconnect with those closest to me –most significantly, my relationship with God. Faithfully, this is where I believe grace comes in. God has a panoramic view of our lives and I passionately believe that He answers prayer. So He hears my countless prayers as I ask Him to guide my path, bless my future husband, prepare my future husband for greatness, show us favor, etc. As I sit here going through the motions of embarking on a fresh start, I consider it such a blessing that my faith is anchored in Him and not man. God doesn’t get confused in His emotions, He isn’t torn about His intentions towards us and most importantly He is who He says He is.

If there’s ever been a time for me to be grateful for the aforementioned quote it’s now.  Even when my wonderful amazing husband comes along, I have to stand on the unwavering foundation that my identity rests in God’s eternal faithfulness.  The song below is one of my all time favorite praise songs, and literally exemplifies my continual desire to grow closer to Him.

I hope this is encouraging to whoever reads this. Have a great week!

What’s Going On: Reduce. Reuse. Recycle.

1 Chelsea Coffey LOTD 9.26.13For as long as I can remember, I’ve had an ongoing love affair with all things 70’s. The fashion, the music, the hair, the list goes on. I go back and forth between whether I was born in the wrong decade or just lucky enough to have been born after to appreciate it in all its amazing fullness.

For as long as i can remember, our family has recycled. My mom especially has a special love for the environment, and her earth friendly nature has had a trickle down affect on me. Back in May, I was approached by a local anti high school dropout program for girls. They were looking to bring the girl’s out to select looks from our Mia’s Closet’s inventory. The pieces would then be altered by the girls to use in a Reduce Reuse Recycle fashion show. There is a significant part of our culture that suggests anything that isn’t new or insanely expensive lacks value. I’m a big believer in breaking that mindset, and this look is a reflection of that.

The layered bracelet in particular was a gift that was originally created as a necklace, but I reworked it to fit my personal style. I’ve got a love hate relationship with inexpensive jewelry. Most of it comes from Forever 21, so the paint fades quickly and I’m always allergic to the earring posts. I’ve got remedies for both issues. I use a liquid pen in gold or silver to touch up fading jewelry, followed up with a clear coat of nail polish.  I’ve actually started using a no chip clear coat from day one to prolong the original paints wear. The same clear nail polish saves the day when it comes to earring posts. It creates a great buffer between the skin and earring. I could go on forever about ways to extend the use of your wardrobe, but hopefully these tips will be useful in the meantime. Have a great weekend!

Let Me See You Move It Shake Cross The Dance Floor

1 Chelsea Coffey LOTD 9.25.13 2 Chelsea Coffey LOTD 9.25.13

My outfits generally channel a vibe of some kind, and I am totally smitten over this fall’s hat selection. This look’s inspiration is Indiana Jones. My new hat reminded both me and my younger brother/photographer of him, and years of watching his movies with our Dad over the holidays.

3 Chelsea Coffey LOTD 9.25.13 4 Chelsea Coffey LOTD 9.25.13 5 Chelsea Coffey LOTD 9.25.13Inspiration feeds into selecting what to wear, but f nothing else, I know how I want to feel once a look is put together. It may be something I’ll chuckle at when looking back in 5 years, but it’s all worth it to feel amazing in that moment. I’ve always joked that I was born in the wrong decade and the 70’s are definitely my favorite when it comes to fashion. My song of the day is Cross the Dance Floor by Treasure Fingers in the spirit of all things boogie. Have a great day!
